Pastor’s Notes
Posted on September 29, 2011
“Wag More, Bark Less”
I received many favorable comments on last Thursday evening’s talk, especially this bumper sticker reference that I now have no option but to stick with it! In fact, one of the school Dads wrote it up on a piece of cardboard and brought it to the Golf Classic on Saturday to influence his foursome and then gave it to me! Another parent expressed the hope that I would not talk about Mass attendance any more this year; my hope would be that I never have to talk about it again except to incoming new parents. Since there is a policy in place in ours and in all Catholic schools the onus falls on School Commission and Parents’ Club to assist the Pastor and Principal in helping to bring about compliance with this as with all our policies. I am still wagging!!
I am very grateful to the parents who came up to say that I am not standing alone in the call for Mass attendance as an integral part of in parish Catholic education as they expressed the conviction that it is an understood part of what they have signed up for. I need to let you know that the Catholic High Schools are adding their voice to this expectation: last year Bishop Blanchet High School sent out mid year letters to parishes asking about students who claimed affiliation with their home parishes and were receiving the in parish tuition rate. When pastors responded saying the family were either not registered or attending or supporting the parish the student was dropped into an out of parish status and cost.
Last month Mike Prato, the Principal at Kennedy Catholic, told pastors at a Deanery meeting that he will be reading all applications in future and if a pastor indicates that he does not see the family at church or they have no involvement with the parish he will place the student in the out-of-parish category. I know that I have overlooked this in the past when I have signed those applications hoping that this would keep families connected to our church and wanting to give students the best chance in their education. This has worked very well to the students’ advantage but not so much for the church connection.
My continued “wagging” instead of “barking” going forward will be to offer the Growing our Faith sessions that have begun this week as advertised on the school and church web sites and to offer an open door to healing and reconciling any past misunderstandings or hurts that have undermined your church attendance. I offer this to demonstrate my intent to live out our parish mission: “Love the Lord God with your whole heart and soul and mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself”.
I still have not had a coaching session from Jack Miller!!

Magazine Drive
Posted on September 29, 2011
Holy Rosary MAGAZINE DRIVE Ends Next Week! Our 3rd Turn in Tuesday HRS has “TURNED IT UP” with $ 27,000 in sales! After 3 weeks, that puts us at a grand total of $56,000. We aren’t quite half way to our goal of $125,000 so we need to really crank up the bass and get rockin’! We only have one more week and everyone is doing a fantastic job and we appreciate EVERY subscription! Please keep selling, our wonderful school is counting on us. We have just 1 more Turn in Tuesday left!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: ***We have a change to how we will count certain subscriptions for prizes*** Although we do not count the dollars that are brought in by students (prizes are based ONLY on number of subscriptions sold), we have heard you and know that there are certain subscriptions that contribute big bucks. Therefore, just like donations, we will give students credit for 5 orders for the 4 - one year subscriptions (People, The Economist, Barrons and the WSJ) that cost over $100 when calculating prizes! This adjustment will take place at the end of the Drive and these orders will NOT count towards weekly classroom totals this year.
So who really got things jammin’ for Turn in Tuesday #3? It was those super star 3rd graders again! This earned them another ducky and a free dress day! Way to go! In fact, the super star 3rd grade maintained “top dawg” status to keep themselves in the lead for total sales after 3 weeks. They are being chased by the awesome 6th graders and the rockin’ 1st graders . We are half way to our goal, so any grade can be on that Holy Rosary Idol stage in a couple of weeks!
Remember, you can be extra “green” by ordering online - go to www.aphearst.com and enter school code wc2897. No need to register the student, just include their name under “Participant”. Thank you to everyone who is ordering online - it makes counting so much easier! Please make sure that you and your customers puts in the Holy Rosary code AND your child’s name in “participants name” before ordering magazines. We have a few of unidentified orders (see list below), so please take a minute to double check that your child has all their online orders listed correctly. If not, .
The following orders need a student! Please see if one of your customers is listed:
- Boos, K.
- Eckerman, M.
- Ingalls, K.
- Kemper, J.
- Matchett, D.
- Matchett, M.
- Millican, M.
- Schendel, K.
- Thenell, P.
If your child should be getting credit for any of these orders, please let Cindy Wingo know immediately! Thank you!
Don’t need a magazine? Buy a $25 gift card, buy one of the beautiful gift items available in the catalog, or make a cash donation (we buy magazines for non profits and your student gets credit (approximately 1 order for every $20!) Important Reminder! Online orders are cutoff at 10 p.m. on Monday night preceding Tuesday Turn In, paper orders must be turned in by 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings to count that day, and all paper orders must have the white and yellow copies of the order forms along with proper payment to be counted. Volunteers Needed next Tuesday morning! We need help counting orders next Tuesday morning! If you are available, please join us in the basement of the parish rectory after morning drop off.

Green Tip: Waste Free Lunches
Posted on September 29, 2011
Now that we’re back in the swing of school, we can give a thought to the lunches we pack for school and work. Here’s where you can use those old cloth napkins with the frayed edges, the beat up utensils and that pile of Tupperware in the drawer! Using those, and a lunchbox instead of a bag, you’ve got a waste free lunch! Let’s throw in credit for using wax paper bags, which biodegrade in about a week, instead of plastic (decades), if you need a disposable container. Just think of the trees we could save with 400+ kids using a napkin every week day for nine months…that’s a lot of paper. Give it a try!

A variety of services and opportunities are offered to students after they test. If you are interested in pursuing this opportunity for your child, more information can be found by visiting the website: www.cty.jhu.edu. This particular study is meant to look at the continuity of our curriculum from grade to grade to ensure that we have a logical and progressive fabric of instruction.
